Under the Tuscan Sun
Meaning and visual impact:
“Under the Tuscan Sun” says it all. A painting depicting the morning mist over the Italian province of Tuscany`s fields being slowly burned off by the strong Italian sun peeking through . The fields display the vivid colours notable in Tuscany in the late summer with the towering cedar trees immaculately trimmed to an impossible point at the top. As the Brunello wears off from the night before one marvels at the incredible natural beauty that is Tuscany.
The work is a semi-abstract expressionistic rendering of the Tuscan landscape using exaggerated colours and images. The painting really comes alive under halogen gallery lights. It is a beautiful painting and really lights up a room.
Technical aspects:
Pure oil on canvas painting. Many layers of thinly diluted oil paint were used to build up the work. Getting the effect of the mist burning off and strong sun peaking through in the background was a long trial and error process. The painting is generally quite flat but the trees have a slight impasto paint effect to enhance light reflection and the illusion that it is sun reflection. Note the tree shadows and the position of the sun. Although a somewhat traditional landscape painting it is very modern in style and has a wide 4 cm frame so no frame is recommended.
